Choose the Right Dermal Filler for You

Choose the Right Dermal Filler for You

Many have heard of the newer alternative to the full face lift and have found excitement in the news. After all, while face lifts can give very profound effects, they are both costly and terribly invasive. Furthermore, it can take weeks to recover fully. With dermal fillers, people can get the wrinkle reducing effects they desire at a fraction of the cost and while sacrificing much less time. These injections, which are placed just under the skin and are meant to plump the skin, thereby reducing wrinkles, can be done in an hour or less at the traditional medical spa. That means no hospital time and a procedure that can be done on lunch break. The side effects are minimal in the vast majority of cases, and may include some redness and slight bruising, or swelling near the injection site. In rare cases, allergic reactions can occur. One should consult with the doctor regarding the possibilities of this before undergoing the procedure. For such a short time investment, these fillers can have effects lasting for a few months or even up to a year. It should, however, be noted that they are not ideal in all cases. In situations of severe sagging, the effects will not be as notable and may not be worth the investment.

About the Brands The most popular versions of dermal filler today tend to be those that are made of hyaluronic acid versus the animal based fillers (collagen is often taken from cows or pigs). Included on the list of hyaluronic acid fillers are Juvederm, Restylane, Perlane, Radiesse, and Pervelle Silk. These are among the most frequently used fillers in this class.

Juvederm was first introduced in this country in 2007 and has won over many patients who enjoy its long lasting nature. This is the longest lasting of the hyaluronic acid fillers and can survive for a year or longer in many instances. It works excellently on deep wrinkles, for improving contours of the face, and also for erasing crow’s feet.

Restylane was first used in the United States of America in 2004. Most professionals who handle the injections find that this serum is most effective for hollows under the eyes, for the plumping of lips, and for wrinkle correction around the nose and mouth. This serum is a bit unlike the others in that repeat injections are encouraged at intervals so it can reach its full potential and last up to 18 months.

Prevelle Silk was first used in 2008 and has a unique feature in that it has a built in anesthetic to reduce any pain around the injection site or where the serum lies under the skin after the procedure is performed. Many doctors already use a numbing agent on the skin before giving the injections, but this can have a more lasting pain relief during the day of the procedure. It is often used for plumping of lips.

Perlane, which was first used in 2007, is better for deeper wrinkles and acne scars versus shallow lines and wrinkles. This product is great in conjunction with an acne facial, as the two can work together to stave of signs of acne for up to six months or longer.

Radiesse is another serum option. Doctors seem to like it for its ability to visually reshape the nose when injected along the brim, and also for improving “jowls,” which many individuals experience as they age.

When, How Much, and What Else? Dermal fillers are most highly recommended for people in their forties and fifties, but each case is evaluated on an individual basis. Most recommended for individuals in their forties and fifties. The procedures typically cost about eight hundred dollars per session, and the doctor will often recommend a filler on a case by case basis. There are less invasive alternatives for those that are nervous about needles. Though they are not as effective, an AHA peel, or alpha-hydroxy acid peel, can separate dead skin cells from the healthy layers to even skin tone, reduce acne scarring, and eliminate shallow lines and wrinkles.
